IMPORTANT 29th Oct 2009. The CWU have now received correspondence from Openreach that instructs us to seek permission from the HR team prior to putting out emails using the Global address system. i.e. company email addresses *@openreach.co.uk. We have previously requested members to furnish the Branch with their private email addresses so that correspondence can be forwarded to those without any restriction put by the company. It is now imperative that members let us have their private email address for future use.

Roadwork Guarding 10.11.09 Members have been through the training scheme, in a number of instances that has been on more than one occasion when BT lost the certificates, and are more than aware of the requirement to provide sufficient roadwork guarding. In some areas of the Country, specifically around Exeter, the local council has been very active in enforcing the requirements with all working parties. In other areas the councils have, to date, been a bit more relaxed in their attitude to enforcement. However, this is now changing as councils begin to realise that the enforcement of roadwork guarding and reinstatement work can be a source of additional capital. We have recently had very real demonstration of that within Monmouthshire County Council area with a couple of members being cited as not providing sufficient guarding for the work being undertaken. It is likely that neighbouring councils will start to pick up on this and act in a similar vein. Members are strongly advised to be extremely cautious in their approach to roadwork guarding. You may think that you can get a job completed just by doing some work at the roadside and putting on the amber beacon. All too often this is not sufficient and you may get spotted by the council. The result is likely to be a fine for the company and in some instances could well be a fine for the individual, which the individual will have to pay. DON'T BE THE ONE TO GET CAUGHT!

Latest Attendance Proposals (28th July 2009)
Rostered attendances over Christmas and the New Year 2009/2010 As you know, Christmas Day and Boxing Day are both Bank Holidays in England and Wales, as is New Years' Day. In Scotland, 2nd January is also a Public Holiday. This year, both Christmas Day (25th December) and New Years' Day (1st January 2010) will fall on a Friday, with Boxing Day (26th December) and 2nd January 2010 both falling on a Saturday. Consequently, the associated official Bank Holidays for the 26th and 2nd have been scheduled in each case for the following Monday. Following discussions with the CWU, it was agreed in January 2000 that no engineer would have a rostered attendance on these dates when they fall on a weekend, and that the rostered attendance would be moved to an appropriate day within the same week. For night workers, shift swaps will be used as in previous years. The operational manager will agree these within the individual teams, mindful that all team members should receive 1 shift off per bank holiday therefore the correct time needs be booked to ensure the correct amount of credit is realised. In order to give our team members adequate visibility of their attendance patterns, we will be making the appropriate changes visible on the systems as soon as possible. Anyone who is uncertain of the impact on their attendance pattern over the holiday period should speak to their line manager.
